Bone Health
The intestinal microbiota significantly influences various aspects of bone integrity. Intestinal microbiota affects the skeletal response to PTH, a hormone crucial for calcium homeostasis and bone remodeling. Research indicates that gut bacteria produce metabolites like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as butyrate, which are essential for PTH to stimulate bone formation and increase bone mass. Depletion of gut microbiota has been shown to lower butyrate levels, impairing PTH’s bone-forming actions.
Probiotics can influence bone metabolism by modulating gut microbiota and enhancing nutrient absorption. Studies suggest that a specific Lactobacillus Reuteri strain can increase bone density and protect against osteoporosis. Lactobacillus Casei is another probiotic which has been linked to improved bone health by influencing gut microbiota composition. When these strains are cultured for 36 hours in either dairy or coconut milk, there is an increase in microbial numbers and absorption rates which enhances their effectiveness to prevent and reverse bone diseases.
Incorporating specific probiotic strains and maintaining a diet rich in minerals, vitamin D, vitamin K, protein, soluble and insoluble fibers, fermented and cultured foods, along with healthy fats can synergistically enhance muscle and bone health.
While working together we will use a combination of a nutrient-dense diet along with beneficial gut microbiota. Together, they play a pivotal role in maintaining overall health. Specific probiotic strains contribute to both muscle and bone health, while dietary choices play a crucial role in supporting these beneficial microbes.
